Zephyrus: What activities are you involved in?

Gavin Richards: I ski for Edina on the varsity team. I’m the captain this year. I’m a yearbook editor on Whigrean. I did business for all four years. Basically, it’s just dealing with everything that’s not physically in the book. I’m also a Hornet Mentor. Outside of school, I do Skijammers. I like being outdoors a lot, so I like skiing in general outside of the sport. I’m involved with my church. I do cathedral choir, which is five hours a week throughout the school year, performing on Wednesday and Sunday nights. I’m also in youth worship.

Z: What moment in high school influenced you the most?

GR: Last year, at the end, when we went online, there’s a quote that my teacher said. She said that although medical workers are exposed to the coronavirus daily and have a life tougher than most of us, we have every right to feel grief. I thought it was very applicable not only to Corona and our current state but all hardships we experience in life. That was definitely a highlight of high school, despite how simple it was.

Z: If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?

GR: Keanu Reeve’s ability in the Matrix of dodging a bullet or dodging a punch. I watched that movie last week. The finesse, the swagger, I wish I had it all.

Z: What actor would you want to play you in a movie about your life and why?

GR: Jim Carrey. He’s got the drama, he’s got the humor, and he could just put it all together.

Z: What does being on court mean to you?

GR: I did not expect to get it at all, but I think once I got on, I tried to treat it more as a privilege rather than an award. It’s something that I have that I shouldn’t take for granted. I shouldn’t fall short or slip away from who I actually am. It’s just kind of like recognition of “you are who you are,” and that’s good. People like you for that.
