Edina Girls’ Tennis Wins 18th State Title

The Edina Girls’ tennis team added another win to their state championship streak on Wednesday after beating Prior Lake 6-1 in the final game. This newest state title places the EGT dynasty at 18 state championships in a row, the longest title run in Minnesota prep sports history.

The team has been winning since 1996, and has only gotten better.  This last season, the ladies went undefeated making for the perfect season.

Winning didn’t come easy, and the anchor match came down to Edina’s senior captain Caitlyn Merzbacher.  After winning the first set and tying the second, the match went into a tie-breaker that Merzbacher won 7-5 giving Edina the 4th win needed to take the title.

After Merzbacher’s final point for the win, the team stormed the courts, and swarmed around their captain.  Senior and EGT player Anna Rummel said, “There were no actual words, but we didn’t need them because everyone was so excited that all of our hard work paid off”.

Edina ended up taking the tournament 6 games to 1 with some outstanding comebacks from the first and third doubles teams.

With a perfect season, and another state championship in the books, this truly adds an additional layer of frosting for the Cake Eaters, and makes keeping the legacy alive that much sweeter.
